This clock is a wonderful example of a clock produced during the late Victorian era in the North of England. Such a clock was primarily bought by the hard working middle class of the Victorian society. Their dreams of owning fine furniture were fueled by the industrial revolution. Looking at this clock you can see it was made for a large room, with a tall ceiling, not some country cottage or small terraced house. It was made to impress, and impress it does.

When the original owner purchased this clock it would have been the finest clock in the area. The wonderful grain of the flame, in the figured mahogany and the more fashionable painted dial makes this clock far more desirable than the slim brass dial clocks of the previous century. Those clocks were considered terribly old fashioned and vulgar, they would have been considered unsuitable for a new Victorian town home.

This dial is absolutely stunning and shows Britannica resting with a lion on a shore while a ship sails in the ocean. The clock hands are brass. The moon dial shows both a ship and a landscape scene. The clock has a four pillar eight-day anchor escapement that strikes the hour on an English bell.
