Antique American Five Tube Grandfather Clock by J.E. Caldwell

This antique grandfather clock has an eight-day time and strike German movement with five-tubes that plays Whittington or Westminster. There is a chime silent selector located at the 3 o’clock position and a strike silent at the 9 o’clock position.

The case is Mahogany with a nice patina and a swan neck pediment with three finials. The door has beveled glass and it stands on claw feet. The dial has Arabic numerals on a silver chapter ring with a moon dial featuring the usual land and seascape.

The clock was retailed by J.E. Caldwell of Pennsylvania.  James Emott Caldwell was the founder of the company, a watchmaker and clockmaker born in Poughkeepsie, NY. He started his business on Maiden Lane in NY City, then in the early 1830’s opened a small watchmakers shop located at 163 Chestnut Street Philadelphia, PA. Later moving to the Widener Building across from City Hall where they remained for 87 years. It was in 1848 that the name changed to J.E. Caldwell and Company.
