This clock is an exception eight-day three-weight Grand Sonnerie Austrian Regulator. We were lucky to come across such fine antique clock. It has a two piece porcelain pie crust bezel dial and has both the original clock hands and pendulum. The case has elegant lines and is made out of high quality grained rosewood.
Grand Sonnerie clocks are sometimes referred to as “Blind man clocks” because they chime both on the quarter-hour and hour. This allows you to know what time it is without looking at the clock.
W. Schönberger was a prominent Austrian clockmaker and his clocks are featured throughout Rick Ortenburger's book "Vienna Regulators and factory Clocks."
During the later part of the 18th century the Austrian clockmakers from Wien (Vienna) were known to make some of the finest clocks. During this time period Vienna clocks were hand-made by master craftsmen. Vienna clocks are considered more valuable than a common Black Forrest Vienna regulator made by Lenzkirch or Gustav Becker.
